It pays to serve Jesus

It pays to serve Jesus, I speak from my heart,
He'll always be with us, if we do our part,
There's naught in this wide world can pleasure afford;
There's peace and contentment in serving the Lord.

Chorus:
I love Him for better than in days of yore,
I'll serve Him more truly than ever before,
I'll do as He bids me whatever the cost,
I'll be a good soldier, I'll die at my post.

And oft when I'm tempted to turn from the track,
I think of my Savior, my mind wanders back
To the place where there nailed Him on Calvary's tree.
I heard a voice saying, "I suffered for thee."

[Chorus]

A place I remember where I was set free,
T'was where I found pardon, a heaven for me;
There Jesus spoke sweetly to my soul,
My sins are forgiven, He made my weary heart whole.

[Chorus]

How rich is the blessing the world cannot give,
I'm satisfied fully for Jesus to live;
Though friends may forsake me and trial arise,
I am trusting Jesus, His love never dies.

[Chorus]

There is no one like Jesus can cheer me today,
His love and His kindness can ne'er fade away;
In winter and summer, In sunshine and rain,
His love and affection are always the same.

[Chorus]

Will you have this blessing that Jesus bestows,
A free full salvation from sin's bitter throes?
O come to the Savior, to Calvary flee,
The fountain is opened, is flowing for thee.

[Chorus]

  2. Hello Fidelis, this hymn was written by Frank C. Huston in 1909. As he played the piano at Providence Christian Church, where he was serving as director of music, the tune came to his heart and he wrote it in the small writing pad that he always carries to jot down such inspirations. But he just forgot about it until his friend, M. E. Mick urged him to write a hymn titled 'It pays to serve Jesus,' although a hymn with that title was in existence, Mick told Huston that he could write a better one. When Huston returned to the Church, he remembered the tune he had written, he brought it out from his pocket and played it on the piano. The wordings, chorus, and stanzas just fell into place, and a wonderful hymn was born.

    The Bible passage behind this hymn is in John 12:26 "Whoever serves me must follow me."

    Also, sorry for the late reply, we are working at including the 'Author' and 'History' feature on this blog.

    Thanks for understanding.

    1. I remembered this song this early morning and had to find the complete lyrics. I also remember it the favorite song of my late mum, Chinyere Ada Aguoru, who passed on almost 24 years ago, after battling with brain tumor for 4 years. Growing up with her we used to hear her sing it constantly and I got to learn it from her. Over the years, each time I hear this song or it comes to my memory and I realize now as a believer that nothing pays like serving the Lord Jesus which I intend to do with all my strength, resources and time inspite of any challenges that may confront me and God helping me, so that when it's time to go home, I can gladly say I died at my post like my mum did. Thank you for sharing the history of this dong. God bless you

  36. Hi John,
    Just a quick correction on the author of this hymn. The Author is not Houston but Eli G. Christy. This hymn is different from the hymn written by Houston. The two hymns share some common title but the hymn you posted here was written by Eli G Christy. I hope this makes sense to you. I love this hymn as well. God bless you.
